Free Webinar Nov. 29 to Help Bike Companies Learn about Sustainability
Session Aims to Show How Bike Industry Can Join Outdoor Industry Efforts
Outdoor Industry Association® (OIA) is presenting a free webinar on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 10:00 am MST to highlight the outdoor industry’s sustainability efforts and how the bike industry can get involved.
Presented by OIA’s corporate responsibility team as well as guest speakers from Specialized and other bike industry companies, the one-hour session will provide an overview of the OIA Sustainability Working Group (SWG) — a volunteer collaboration among more than 250 outdoor industry brands, retailers and suppliers working to identify and improve the environmental and social impacts of their shared global supply chains.
A key takeaway for attendees will be how bike industry companies can get involved in these efforts and start measuring and improving the sustainability of their products.
“The outdoor industry’s collaborative sustainability efforts are groundbreaking, providing a common language and framework for measuring product-level sustainability,” said Beth Jensen, OIA’s director of corporate responsibility. “We’d like to see more bike industry companies get involved in this work.”
“Specialized joined the SWG last year to help develop the indexing tool for equipment,” said Bryant Bainbridge, who leads Specialized Bicycle Component’s corporate sustainability efforts. “The bike industry can leverage the outdoor industry’s work, which is more than five years in the making, to engage brands and suppliers and make sure all are using the same tools and standards for measuring product sustainability. ”

Business and environment news :Lenzing Modal Changes Branding to Emphasize Greener Production
Lenzing Modal's new slogan has been changed to "CO2 Neutral Softness by Edelweiss Technology” from “Makes the World a Softer Place” in a bid to highlight the fibers eco-friendly credentials in a greening economy.
Lenzing’s symbiotic production process makes Lenzing Modal CO2 neutral*: the full integration of the site in Austria– pulp production and fiber production in the same location– leads to the recovery of excess energy and valuable wood substances. Pulp production at Lenzing is energy self-sufficient and also generates energy for Modal production as a whole.
“We are proud that Lenzing Modal is CO2 neutral*. Born from our
desire to produce in an increasingly eco-friendly manner, we have
developed proprietary production techniques. We have become pioneers in
the design of wood organic refineries,” Dieter Eichinger, vice president
Lenzing Textil, explains. “This combination makes Lenzing Modal unique.
Where else can you find Modal production which uses beechwood and
operates in an energy self-sufficient manner, recovering 95 percent of
the chemicals required in the process? This is definitely something
unique worldwide”, Dieter Eichinger says.
“Lenzing Modal is much more than just simply soft. We wish to pay tribute to this fact and reposition the Lenzing Modal brand”, Marketing Director Andreas Dorner explains. “Expanding the fiber’s image from softness to eco-friendliness mirrors the changes in the demands from the marketplace. Today customers not only seek a high-quality product. They want to be sure that it was produced in a fair and eco-friendly way.”

The environmentally compatible production of Lenzing Modal is reflected with the term “Edelweiss technology.” It is only at Lenzing that all the environmental parameters are applied: pulp production and fiber production at a single site, the use of domestic beechwood, up to 95 percent recovery of the chemicals used, and environmental technologies specifically developed for this purpose.
Now Lenzing Modal will be available in greater quantities and “bleached with oxygen“. This is another step to make the fiber eco-friendlier. Nearly half of overall Lenzing Modal production can be manufactured in this process.

Awards : Liberty Bottleworks Wins First American Made Outdoor Gear Award by Kokatat Inc.
2013 American Made Outdoor Gear Award by Kokatat Inc., a leading U.S.
manufacturer of technical apparel and gear for paddle sports.
Liberty Bottleworks began producing its American made, BPA-free, recycled aluminum water bottles in 2010 at a purpose-built factory in Yakima, WA. From the outset, Liberty has been committed to making its products in America by American workers.
"Liberty stood out among the so many great stories we received," said Jeff Turner of Kokatat, the founder and host of the American Made Outdoor Gear Award. "Not only do they make a product in a highly competitive space that is dominated by imports, but they do so in a factory where the machines were also built in the US."
More than 50 of the most innovative domestic manufacturers in the outdoor market entered the first-annual "Sassy" award program – a long overdue chance to raise a glass to the leaders in American made quality, craftsmanship and creativity in the outdoor world.
As winners of the American Made Outdoor Gear Award Liberty Bottleworks will take one-year ownership of the "Sassy" travelling trophy -- a hand carved, 3-foot-tall, redwood Sasquatch from Humboldt County, CA. An official "Sassy" presentation will be made on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City, UT.
"We are humbled to be recognized with the first Sassy and very proud to represent American manufacturing," said Liberty Co-Founder Ryan Clark. "We make the best bottle out there, but it's really about remaking our country's economy and proving that American-made products can compete in every aspect of the market. We're thrilled to win this award, and we'll be just as thrilled to pass it on to another manufacturer next year that's as passionate about this movement as we are."
Kokatat's hosting of the awards is rooted in their own history, as the brand's founder and president, Steve O'Meara, recognized from the start that keeping production local was necessary in order to control quality and continually develop the finest and driest paddling apparel in the world.
"It's amazing to me that the reasons I began Kokatat and have kept our production in the U.S. are shared by so many of the Sassy applicants," O'Meara said. "Their commitment and successes will ensure a stronger America and keep manufacturing from becoming a myth like our friend Sassy."
The 2013 American Made Outdoor Gear Award harvested a variety of intriguing data regarding US manufacturing and sourcing. A sample of statistics from entries include: 80% of applicants own their own facility; 74% of applicants created new manufacturing jobs in the last year totaling over 500 new jobs; and more than 60% of the applicants reported that 90% or more of all the goods they sell are made in the US.
"Every applicant, bar none, is bullish on the prospects of domestic manufacturing and believes that not only will they be increasing capacity at their company, but that the trend will grow throughout the country over the next ten years," added Turner. "We had applicants ranging from large established companies like Woolrich (www.woolrich.com) and Thule Car Racks (http://www.thule.com) to new start ups like ReFleece (http://www.refleece.com) that repurposes used Patagonia fleece jackets into iPad and Kindle cases."
Along with an overall winner, Kokatat recognized winners in several categories based on company size. The category winners will receive a miniature version of the Sassy award during the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market celebration.

Sales for the full year are now forecast at $130 million versus $116 million in 2011, representing a gain of 12 percent.
The figures and update were included in its quarterly Insider 2012 mailed out to franchises and other partners.
Gross margins for the period reached 45.2 percent, relatively consistent throughout the first three quarters. Overall inventory ROI was $3.40 with a turn rate of 4.1. Fleet Feet said the focus has shifted to analyzing the data the system provides.

New product : Wave Sport Recon 83 now CORE WhiteOut Outfitting Now Available
Greenville, S.C., Nov 26, 2012 -
Wave Sport, the long-time leader in all things whitewater, this week announces the release of their new 2013 whitewater offerings – the Recon 83 and the CORE WhiteOut Outfitting System. The brand steps up its big water game for the upcoming season with the safety conscious, confidence-building, and comfort enhancing dynamic duo – the new creeker, Recon, with CORE WhiteOut Outfitting System. Wave Sport’s hottest new combo will allow hard-core paddlers to take their skills to the next level in style.
Wave Sport Recon:
Wave Sport’s all-new Recon will get paddlers down the river safely while performing at the highest levels of creeking, river trekking, and class IV-V+ boating. The Recon will make boundary pushing safer, enhancing paddler confidence and skill sets.
The continuous rocker profile combined with the unique distribution of volume makes the Recon very fast and easy to boof. The unique volume in the bow and its pronounced, upswept shape make the Recon resurface and unload water quickly when blasting through holes, while the domed stern deck minimizes back-ending in holes and drops. The location of the full stern chine combined with the generous side wall flare provides superb secondary stability and substantial control when carving, moving across a current, or tracking.
The Recon is also equipped with seven points of rescue to provide maximum opportunities for safety. The new arched bow and stern soft grip handles provide an ergonomic fit for comfortable carrying (even in cold weather). The new handles sit higher on the boat for greater accessibility in a rescue situation and there are no scoop outs to hinder water shedding. The Recon is equipped with Wave Sport’s all new outfitting system offering highly adjustable seating for greater comfort and a safer bulkhead system to reduce the risk of entrapment. This boat’s aesthetic features include a very distinctive, high buff polish with a matte texture finish.
The Recon was designed for intermediate and advanced paddlers who want best-in-class performance and maximum safety features while enjoying both multi-day river trips and tackling class IV & V+ rapids. The Recon 83 is available now, with additional sizes hitting retail markets at a later date. The 93 will be available January 1, 2013, and the 70 will drop May 15, 2013.
Wave Sport CORE WhiteOut Outfitting System: Taking safety, comfort and adjustability to the next level, the now-available 2013 CORE WhiteOut Outfitting System combines Wave Sport’s stylish, marine vinyl white pads with the most innovative outfitting technology today.
Safety features such as a reinforced bulkhead footbrace system lessen the risk of foot entrapments during heavy impact. Additionally, the ratcheting leg lifter provides unparalleled adjustability for a more secure fit and easily accessible storage space, and the seating in both the play and creeker models includes fuller, more comfortable cockpit padding and several inches of fore and aft seat adjustment with an intuitive control system. Quick-release, adjustable hip pads provide additional comfort and control, and a re-engineered backband provides greater functionality and easier access to ample storage space behind the seat. Both systems have straps to secure a water bottle and multiple attachment points to secure gear.
Available across the Wave Sport product line, our CORE WhiteOut Outfitting is more globally compatible, utilizing metric hardware. We’ve also included tethers to secure all parts that could potentially be lost and added multiple attachment points to secure gear in the ample storage areas.
Creeker Seat- A few features in the new CORE WhiteOut Outfitting System are unique to the creeker version. The rotomolded tank style creek seat is stiffer and more durable, making it more effective in preventing entrapment and more efficient in energy transfer from the paddler to the kayak. The step-out wall is also stiffer, more durable, and more ergonomic with an easy-grip handle. This makes shoulder carrying easier and the step-out motion safer and more efficient if required. The creeker system also has an added storage tray that increases storage space while adding additional hull structure to the boat.
Play Seat-Additional adjustments to the play outfitting include a refined quick-reference indexing system that allows on-the-fly adjustment and gives the paddler up to four inches of fore and aft adjustment. Also, the hull beam is welded to the kayak hull for increased durability and structural support.
About Wave Sport:

Play Seat-Additional adjustments to the play outfitting include a refined quick-reference indexing system that allows on-the-fly adjustment and gives the paddler up to four inches of fore and aft adjustment. Also, the hull beam is welded to the kayak hull for increased durability and structural support.

Retail stores news : DECATHLON NEXT STORE ESTABLISHMENT IN MIDDELBURG ( Netherlands)
The fourth store of Decathlon in our country is possible in Middelburg. Perhaps this year about a decision, so let Eric Bodhuin, Chairman Decathlon Netherlands recently announced.
Decathlon comes Football Experience goesThe new Decathlon settles, if the plans go ahead, in the so-called Zealand Entertainment Park, a park full of active leisure attractions, eateries and shops located at the business Mortiere on the outskirts of Middelburg "just off the A28.
ZEP are located in the Family Park Mini Mundi, the Glow Golf golf complex, Climbing Adventure Middelburg and the National Football Museum Football Experience.
The retail offer in ZEP is currently not unimpressive with only branches of BCC, Toys XL and SES Computers. Moreover, it was recently announced that Football Experience the capital of Zeeland is leaving to move to a (not yet known) location in the center of the country. Too few visitors (approximately 50,000 instead of the expected 200,000 per year) have led to the proposed relocation. Until a new location for Football Experience is found, remains the football museum in ZEP.
Opening probably until mid-2014Even if Decathlon this year to decide on a possible arrival to Middelburg it would still take until mid-2014 before the fourth Dutch branch of the originally French chain of sports mega stores opens its doors.
According Bodhuin in the Zeeland Provincial Gazette gets the office in the capital of Zeeland an area of 2,500 square meters.
Asked about the reason for Decathlon has dropped in Middelburg, Bodhuin replied: "Why not? Here in Middelburg might present an opportunity for. Netherlands is a small country. Moreover, Belgium close. Practice shows that most people are willing to spend an hour, a half hour drive to visit our stores. "Decathlon features in our currently has branches in Amsterdam, Kerkrade and Best. The nearest Zealand establishments of Decathlon in Belgium are located in Bruges and Antwerp.

New products : FX-SPORT Launch VR1 Programmable Personal Trainer Wireless Sports Headphones with built in Premium Quality Waterproof Mp3 Player
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FX-Sport have today announced the launch of its water resistant and wire
free Programmable Personal Trainer headphones with integrated CD quality, 8GB mp3 player.
A first of its kind for the sports world, the VR1 Programmable Personal Trainer Headphones are a purpose made, wire free, lightweight and super comfortable new training aid. They provide the user with both high quality music and the luxury of having their own personal trainer to customise any workout for any activity, including swimming.
The Programmable Personal Trainer facility allows the user to customise any workout with instruction, time notifications and motivational messages in their own words. Up to 64 personalised messages can be input to kick in at precisely designated times to structure any exercise session. This is done using the simple and free software downloaded from the FX-Sport website. There is also the option to race against a virtual athlete. All workouts can be saved on the software to provide a library of training sessions for speedy uploading in the future. A selection of voices are available for the messages in both male or female and in a variety of languages and accents.
Premium quality music is produced by the integrated 8GB mp3 player which uses text to speech software to read and voice album names or playlists to the user, using the buttons on the right headphone. This way there is no need for a screen which can be impractical whilst training. The mp3 player is compatible with mp3, wma and aac [m4a] formats. Bass and treble settings can also be customised via the software.
Duncan Walsh, an ex-professional sportsman and director of www.FX-Sport.co.uk said “We believe the VR1 will allow elite athletes, serious trainers and recreational exercisers to squeeze more out of their workouts by having their own personal trainer motivating them in a way specific for that individual. The personal trainer aspect especially, has almost limitless applications. Rather than just analysing performance post workout, the VR1 will get a better performance out of the user during the workout...and whilst listening to their favourite music.”
The VR1 Programmable Personal Trainer headphones retail at £139 whilst the V1 standard model will retail at £114. Both are available for purchase at www.fx-sport.co.uk.

Fair Trade and help action : CHAOS Headwear finds their way to Swaziland
Chaos Sales Representative, Tom McGraw and his family’s work in Swaziland help a few heads along the way.
Steamboat Springs, CO (November 21, 2012) -- Chaos Sales Representative, Tom McGraw and his family visit Swaziland Orphanages and Care-Points each year. This past summer his daughter Lauren and twin sons, Ian and Shaun, made the trip. Lauren sends a thank you for the new hats delivered to three of these Care-Points in a very rural part of the country. This is a thank you from our team to Tom’s family for their hard work and service over the years in a very underserved region of the world.
Swaziland is a land-locked, partially mountainous, country in South Africa, bordered to the north, south and west by South Africa, and to the east by Mozambique. Swaziland is a member of the Southern African Development Company, the African Union and the Common Wealth of Nations. About 75% of the population is employed in subsistence farming and 60% of the population live on less than the equivalent of US $1.25 per day. The organization that Tom and his family travel with is AIM (Adventures in Missions) who serve the community in many ways, including setting up Care-Points with a purpose of providing at least one meal per day to the most impoverished in these dry and cold rural areas. The AIDS Pandemic and poverty have resulted in 100’s of thousands of children going hungry each day.
Every summer for the past eight years, the McGraw team has been taking Chaos Beanies to Swaziland to give out to the orphans. Chaos headwear donates beanies along with other donated samples from the corporate offices. Swaziland has the highest rate of AIDS in the world per capita and there are close to 200,000orphans in the country with a population of about a million. Although it is a common misconception that it is always hot in South Africa, due to the surrounding mountains, it gets very cold there in the winter season.
Lauren McGraw wrote, “The beanies are always a welcomed and loved gift to the kids. You can let them know that I personally helped distribute the hats to these beautiful kids. The kids at the Care-Point were so excited and loved showing them off. Plus, their winter is June-Aug and is chilly cold, with an average temp between 40-50's and can fall below zero at night. So the beanies were a welcome source of comfort and warmth.”
In addition to the McGraw family program, Chaos Headwear is also a contractor with a very special hand knit program in Peru. Javier Dam, director of the Head Knitter’s Guild, believes the contract with Chaos, and other like-minded companies, has beenvital to helping improve the livelihood of the families in the remote Alti-Planos regions of Peru.
The Chaos Moon Shadow-Peru Collection is co-developed by Chaos in Canada with Director of Design Cynthia Surette and The Head Knitter’s Guild in Peru, producing decorative and whimsical designs made from 100% alpaca and alpacaacrylic blends. The line is 100% supplied by the Head Knitter’s Guild whose mission is to sustainably support thirty-five indigenous mountain pueblos with alternative year round regular employment. The Moon Shadow collection supplies resorts and specialty boutiques nationwide and can also be found at www.ChaosHats.com.
