Sport event : Timbuk2 Sponsors the 2013 Red Hook Crit Cycling Series

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 20, 2013) - Timbuk2, the original San Francisco bag company, today announces its sponsorship of the 2013 Red Hook Criterium Championship Cycling Series, an unsanctioned, nighttime fixed gear race. Due to rapid growth in participation, prestige and spectators, 2013 marks the addition of a second Red Hook Crit race in Brooklyn, New York, as well as international expansion to Milan and Barcelona. The Red Hook Crit four-race series will occur on Mar. 30 at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, New York; Jun. 8 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York; Aug. 24 in Barcelona, Spain; and early October in Milan, Italy.

Sponsoring the Red Hook Crit for a second consecutive year, Timbuk2 again displays its deep-seated roots in bike culture by directly supporting one of the country’s most popular urban cycling events. In accordance with its commitment to providing gear for cyclists of all levels, Timbuk2 is creating custom limited-edition Red Hook Crit-branded bags using their newest line of performance cycling bags, the Especial Messenger and the Especial Medio, which will be for sale at the races and online. Timbuk2 is also sponsoring select riders, including two-time winner and two-time runner-up of the Red Hook Crit in Brooklyn, Neil Bezdek, and 2012 Milan Red Hook Crit winner Evan Murphy, both racing in the Red Hook Crit races in Brooklyn on Mar. 30 and Jun. 8.

Unique elements of the race are the actual racers and the bikes used in the race. Whereas traditional cycling races feature predominantly professional cyclists, the Red Hook Crit includes a blend of amateur road and track racers, bicycle messengers and urban cycling enthusiasts in addition to pros. Fixed gear track bikes are mandatory and require riders to possess both street-tuned handling skills and high levels of fitness.

The first round of the Red Hook Crit takes place on Saturday, Mar. 30, 2013 at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Brooklyn, New York and the second race will take place at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Saturday, Jun. 30, 2013. The intense, spectator friendly race is the pinnacle of a weekend of events that includes a pre-race dinner and after party.
