Metolius, makers of the safest and best rock climbing gear around, sponsors the Northern California Youth Climbing League
(YCL). Bringing young climbers together throughout Northern
California, the YCL’s goal is to get youth excited about climbing.
Metolius will provide the YCL with support and equipment to foster
growth in the next generation of climbers.
“We are excited to have Metolius on board,” says YCL Director, Andy
Puhvel. “We want the best for our kids and Metolius climbing gear is
simply the best on the market. It is important to us to foster the
connection between young climbers and companies like Metolius, who give
so much back to the climbing community.”
With five participating gyms and multiple competitions in Northern
California, the YCL offers youth a unique opportunity to compete against
peers in a fun and relaxed format. With a successful 2013 youth league
season just wrapping up, the YCL looks forward to growing the program
for next season.
The league is presented by Metolius and Evolv, and receives support from a list of other sponsors including Clif Bar, Sanuk, Climbing Magazine and Yo! Basecamp Rock Climbing Camp.
YCL participants are given support and gear from these sponsors, making
participation in the season and competitions possible.
“The YCL is a wonderful program,” says Brooke Sandahl, Vice President
of Metolius Climbing. “It’s cool to see Andy create and organize
leagues like this for the kids. We are honored to give our support and
take part in it.” The YCL joins the Hueco Rock Rodeo in a list of recent youth climbing initiatives Metolius has extended support to.

About Youth Climbing League
Presented by Yo! Basecamp Rock Climbing Camp, Northern California’s
Youth Climbing League was founded in 1996 and is America’s longest
running competition series. Bringing together kids ages 7-18 from over
10 gyms throughout the greater Bay Area, the YCL is a fun recreational
competition series that encourages kids to train hard and try hard
without over-emphasizing the stressful aspects of competition climbing.
Sponsored by Evolv and Metolius, two West Coast companies who are
leaders in the climbing industry, the league is proud to bring together
local young climbers, coaches, and companies to emphasize the unique
community aspect of our sport. During the season—which includes four
competitions and a Championship event—young climbers and parents get a
chance to know one another, climb and boulder together, and share the
fun sport of indoor climbing. Through generous donations from Metolius,
Evolv, Clif Bar, Sanuk, Climbing Magazine, and Yo! Basecamp, kids are
stoked with climbing gear goodies throughout the season, getting them
excited about their own climbing and what’s going on in the sport of
climbing. For many of these kids, the YCL is their first time ever
climbing, and one of the league’s goals is to spark their curiosity
about outdoor rock climbing. Even Alex Honnold started out in the YCL
before he went on to blow the standards of big wall climbing out the
roof! The Youth Climbing League is a great structure for getting kids
motivated to push themselves and to realize the unique and fun community
of people who participate in the sport of climbing.
