Interbike 2013
LAS VEGAS--Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., a preeminent manufacturer of high-performance audio, video, computer and professional DJ equipment for the home, car and business markets, today officially released in the United States its innovative Pioneer® SGY-PM900H79 Pedaling Monitor/Power Meter Sensor and SGX-CA900 Cyclocomputer. Since its demonstration at last year’s 2012 Interbike Show as the bicycle industry’s first on-bike dual leg power meter and pedaling monitor system, Pioneer has been relentlessly refining the system for its North American release for superb accuracy, consistency and reliability.
Pioneer’s robust system is the first ever to achieve on-bike, real time, dual-leg pedaling power measurements and analysis, graphically illustrating left and right power output, pedaling stroke efficiency, power loss, force vector analysis, and torque, in addition to cadence, heart rate, GPS positioning, speed, distance, elevation gain/loss, barometric pressure, ambient temperature, and more.
At the heart of the system are two proprietary strain gauge monitors developed by Pioneer that provide the highest power recording rate (on both legs) using 12 different points (every 30 degrees) on a single 360 degree pedaling stroke. The dynamic information from the monitors is transmitted via a special ANT+™ stream so it can be graphically illustrated in real time on Pioneer’s customizable high-resolution cyclocomputer. Within one complete left/right stroke, up to 199 data points of the rider’s performance parameters are analyzed by the system, which can be illustrated in detail on Pioneer’s online service, Cyclo-Sphere.
“For the first time, riders will see a complete on-bike performance analysis of their entire pedaling stroke showing left and right leg pedaling efficiency and pedaling loss so they can instantly make changes to their riding technique in real time,” said David Bales, manager of new business for Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “With the help of the Belkin Pro Cycling Racing team, Pioneer engineers refined the system throughout the development stage until its release, putting it through rigorous tests and races to ensure riders will obtain accurate and reliable data during their ride sessions.”
SGY-PM900 Dual Strain Gauge Monitors
Designed for use with Shimano® DURA-ACE® crank sets, the most popular aftermarket cranks on the market, Pioneer’s highly accurate strain gauge monitors are designed for professional installation on both left and right arm cranks to provide detailed statistics of power, cadence and efficiency. The monitors transmit not only raw power data but also numerous parameters necessary for improving technique and performance, including where in the pedal rotation power is applied and the torque and force angle of the pedal stroke, as well as power deficiency within the stroke, which are all depicted in detail via the Cyclocomputer.
- Wireless transmitter
- Operating time: up to 200 hours (two CR2032 batteries included)
- Water resistance rating: IPX6
- Resistant to oil and environmental conditions

The SGX-CA900 Cyclocomputer
Pioneer’s Cyclocomputer provides a unique interface that enable riders to see their performance measurements instantly. Detailed and analyzed pedaling data, including the entire left and right force vector information, are instantly communicated to the rider on the high resolution 2.2-inch color touch screen display. The display interface is fully customizable with up to nine data points that can be seen on the screen for continuous and instantaneous performance feedback.
- LCD QVGA at 320 x 240 pixel resolution
- Measuring at only 3.3" x 2.67" x .86"
- Built-in GPS for tracking and positioning
- Barometer and thermometer
- Rechargeable built-in Li-ion battery (up to 12 hours operating time)
- ANT+ module to pair it with industry standard ANT+ sensors
- Cadence/speed capable (component sold separately)
- Mounting cradle
- Mini USB cable for power charging and data transfer
In addition, the data collected by the Cyclocomputer can be easily transferred and shared through Cyclo-Sphere, Pioneer’s free online cloud service where riders can further analyze their performances. The online service offers history management and route viewing (by date, map or ride list). With Pioneer’s expertise in global positioning technology, the service enables interactive analysis from a single screen with the ability to log ride sessions and track histories.
The Pioneer SGY-PM900H79 pedaling monitor/power meter sensors and SGX-CA900 Cyclocomputer are available with suggested retail prices of $1600 and $900 respectively. The Pioneer system is now available at authorized specialty bike retailers.
