Winners for Best Men's Winter Boots Published by OutdoorGearLab.com, including Editors' Choice, Best Buy, and Top Pick Awards.

Mar. 28, 2014 - CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- OutdoorGearLab, a popular website known for its detailed comparison reviews of outdoor gear and apparel, recently announced the award winners for men's winter boots. Seven well-regarded models were put to the test during a winter season in Mammoth Lakes, California and the mountain west.

The test team included backcountry ski guides, ski patrollers, and mountain town residents, all of whom wear insulated boots on a regular basis during everyday life in the winter. These boots were worn to clean off cars and shovel sidewalks, to get to and from the ski area, and to run errands during snowy weather. These test models were rated on the metrics of comfort, warmth, water resistance, traction, ease of use, and style. After extensive testing, wearing, and comparing, awards were given to the best performers in the categories of Editors' Choice, Best Buy, and Top Pick selections.

Bogs Ultra Mid

According to lead reviewer Jediah Porter, the Bogs Ultra Mid are the most comfortable and easiest to use boots, and they are adequately warm and waterproof. These combined features rank them at the top of the pack and earn them the Editors' Choice award. Styled more like a rain boots, these neoprene pull-on boots slide on easily and cradle the foot with a secure and comfortable fit for walking. They include thick, aftermarket quality insoles which support the arches of the feet. The rubber around the outside of the foot makes them incredibly waterproof, leaving the only vulnerability to wetness an over the top breach. Porter also notes that these are very reasonably priced boots, further increasing their value.

Kamik NationPlus

As the least expensive boots in his test group, review editor Jediah Porter writes that the Kamik NationPlus are also among the top performers in his group, winning them the Best Buy award. A pac style boot with a removable liner, the NationPlus combines warmth, comfort, and a close enough fit for easy walking. Porter explains that most boots in this style feel sloppy while walking, but the NationPlus feels low profile and secure. This model also comes in a wide version, which accommodates more people. For a standard winter boot at a very attractive price, Porter highly recommends this model.

Baffin Arctic Men

The Baffin Arctic are generously insulated and have a high cuff and thick liner, making them the warmest boot in Porter's test. He awards this pair a Top Pick selection for the warmest design he tested, which works best for people spending a decent amount of sedentary time out in the cold. This pair has a removable inner liner that uses shiny reflective technology aimed at increasing warmth. Porter states that these are not the most fashionable boots, but the warmth, water resistance, and traction make them an excellent choice for cold weather foot protection.

Columbia Bugaboot Plus II

This pair of boots is designed in the style of an insulated hiking boot. Porter observes that the insulation is thin, but the fit and walking performance far exceed any of the other models he tested, earning the Columbia Bugaboot Plus II a second Top Pick award for its unique and specialized performance. Though they are not as warm as other models in his test, due to a combination of excellent walking performance, a waterproof membrane, and insulation, Porter concludes that these boots are ideal for winter hiking, snowshoeing, and hunting.

The complete comparison review provides an overall look at how each boot performed in relation to the other models tested. Porter also explains the different styles of winter boots, such as pac boots, pull-on boots, and insulated walking boots, and elaborates on when a customer is most likely to use a boot of a certain style. In his collected data, Porter records helpful details such as the shaft height of each pair and the maximum puddle depth before water leaks in over the top of the boots' cuffs. All together, this review provides an excellent look at the market offerings in this category of footwear and provides customers with a useful free resource for researching products of this type.
