Mitch Abshere, the creative force behind Captain Fin Co. can be seen as
an world-class surf visionary or a just a normal guy who lives in a van
down by the beach—regardless, there’s no doubt that he has brought fun
to the fin through creative graphics, unique athletes and sophisticated
attitude. Abshere collaborated with Vans this season by diving deep into
Vans’ design heritage to present a collection that unifies the two
brands’ unique DNA, and embodies a fresh perspective of classic surf
style for fall. The new Vans x Captain Fin collection
offers a full capsule of apparel, accessories and footwear in a bold
color motif of black, gold and maroon, complemented by familiar Vans
checkerboard patterns and signature logos.
The first of three footwear offerings is the Vans x Captain Fin Old Skool,
showcasing the tried and true Sidestripe, a classic icon all its own.
The Old Skool is joined by two Surf Sider styles, the Vans x Captain
Fin Fairhaven, a chukka- inspired Surf Sider built with premium textiles including leather and suede, and the Thresher Sandal, a longtime staple of Surf Sider sandals.
Somewhere between designing fins for Dane Reynolds and Joel Tudor, the
Captain found the time to create a thoughtful collection of apparel
pieces including two illustrative tees, most notably the very Southern
California “Stay Glassy.” Trademark style is underscored in the Captain Fin Boardshort, featuring a 19” outseam and 2-way stretch design that combines Vans DNA with both checkerboard and stripes on each panel. The Captain Fin Backpack,
a 35-litre military-inspired rucksack is complete with canvas TPE
Backing – a necessary companion for your next road trip. Finally,
inspired by Captain Fin Co.’s inimitable style, accessories like the Captain Fin Bucket Hat and the Captain Fin beanie top off the collection as the final accouterment to the ever-stylish Vans x Captain Fin ensemble.
About Vans:
Vans is a Southern California-based manufacturer of sneakers,
skateboarding shoes and other shoe types catering primarily to the
skateboarder/surfer youth market.
Originally known as Van Doren Rubber Company, Vans was founded on March 16, 1966 by Paul Van Doren, Jim Van Doren (Brother), Serge D'Elia (Investor based in Japan), and Gordy Lee on 704E Broadway in Los Angeles, CA.
At first, Vans shoes were produced in the store, decades later American production of Vans shoes ended in July 1995. Vans began taking custom orders when people wanted different color schemes on their shoes.
In the beginning, Vans designed their shoes with a diamond tread. Later on, the middle part of each shoe cracked and fell apart during heavy use, prompting Vans to add vertical lines in the tread to increase strength, friction and grip. The tread was officially named the "waffle-sole."
Today, Vans works heavily in the surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, urban and punk markets. The brand has also become popular over the last two years after re-introducing their much-loved slip-on. They have also marketed additional items such as clothing and skateboarding accessories.
