The breakfasts, luncheons and receptions encouraged journalists to mix, mingle and learn about current snow sports topics and get fired up for the season ahead.
SIA was excited to add a new element to the annual tour by partnering with Protect Our Winters (POW) helping to educate media about POW’s current efforts on battling climate change.
“Each fall we hit the road and interact with media from all parts of the country and it’s really our first opportunity to talk about the massive amount of analysis we conduct over the summer when all of the results for the past season are in and we have a clear view of the coming season. It’s great to get out of the office, share information and build on the excitement before the snow starts flying,” commented Kelly Davis, SIA’s Director of Research.
“As a ski writer, I know I have to get info on things like new snow guns, skier visits and capital improvement plans. SIA helps me take it to a new level – from fashion trends to environmental issues to what makes the heart of a snow sport enthusiast tick (and what drives them to the mountain or keeps them away), SIA constantly expands my view of my industry,” commented Moira McCarthy Stanford, ski, adventure and travel writer.
SIA’s media tour kicked off in Portland, Oregon in September at a reception held before Jeremy Jones’ HIGHER film premier. As POW’s Founder and President, Jones brought the group of media, industry reps and resorts up-to-speed on current efforts by POW, while SIA’s Western Sales and Marketing Manager, Dave Wray, shared regional trends, participation numbers and the state-of-the-industry for snow sports.
SIA staff then traveled on to Colorado to check-in with the many snow sports-focused journalists based in Denver and Boulder followed by a luncheon in San Francisco, California in-conjunction with the SnowBomb Ski & Snowboard Festival. SIA wrapped it all up with a breakfast presentation in Boston, MA during last week’s Boston.com Ski & Snowboard Expo.

At each event, SIA presented fresh stats from SIA’s Research Department plus initial findings from SIA’s Downhill Consumer Intelligence Project (DCIP) – the first research effort in a decade focused on developing a comprehensive understanding of alpine and snowboard consumers that will guide strategies and tactics to grow snow sports participation. Protect Our Winters (POW) provided information on how media can help educate consumers on global warming’s effects on snow sports as well as so many other aspects of modern life.
