During early season training at Copper Mountain with the U.S. Ski Team we were on the mountain early, before the sun had even come over the Tem Mile Range. It was cold, about 2 degrees Fahrenheit with no sun and a stiff wind at the top of the lift. This made for challenging training conditions. All the athletes were wearing their most insulated puffy jackets along with their padded race suits and back protectors. The jackets were visibly restricting their range of movement. It was clear that in order to keep warm they had to sacrifice freedom of motion and cram themselves into constricting outerwear.
As the SYNC crew looked on we knew there had to be a better way to keep athletes warm and allow them to move dynamically, as they would if they were training or racing. Each piece of gear had to work with and complement the other, each layer building upon the other. The problem was obvious – restrictive outerwear that inhibited dynamic range of motion. We knew we needed to think differently to provide a solution that delivered results for some of the most demanding consumers on the mountain.
The mission was clear. Build technical outerwear that delivers unparalleled range of motion but does not sacrifice the technical requirements of current state of the art warmth, waterproof/breathability and durability. Game on!
Move Free became the driving vision for this project. We looked at different ways of patterning jackets to allow for more movement but this resulted in bulky, ill fitting garments. We looked at paneling in stretch materials in key locations but this did not deliver the level of seamless stretch performance we demanded and often meant we had to compromise on warmth or waterproofness. We knew the answer was to use a knit body fabric.
Knit fabrics are constructed in such a way that stretch is the main thing that they do. Think of your base layer. It is a knit and has amazing stretch. However, it is not durable enough to be used as an outerwear fabric. SYNC worked directly with our fabric mill to create a knit fabric that would be appropriate for an outerwear jacket. We call this new fabric Motion 360 and it is a game changer.
With the SYNC Motion 360 interlock fabric we finally had a lightweight stretch material that could be used in an outerwear jacket. We combined that with Primaloft Down Blend insulation for warmth in all conditions and added a stretch woven waterproof/breathable mélange overlay on the shoulder for durability and protection from snow and rain.
The SYNC Stretch Puffy has brought disruptive innovation based on athlete feedback to all outdoor winter enthusiasts. Since early December we have had our test jacket on athletes training and racing all over the world. The feedback has been incredible. True performance and comfort for mountain athletes is finally here.
Whether you are race training or just on the mountain enjoying some runs, the Motion 360 fabric allows for seamless, dynamic movement and comfort that cannot be matched by anything on the market today. This new technology will be available at the best winter sports retailers beginning in September 2015. However, through our SYNC Stretch Puffy Kickstarter campaign consumers and retailers have the chance to purchase this jacket at a substantial discount and be part of bringing to market the latest in outerwear technology.
The crew at SYNC is dedicated to helping athletes push limits, challenge the status quo and strive for that which is beyond the horizon. Check SYNC out on out website or Facebook Page.
