Hurley’s New High-Performance Boardshort: the Phantom Julian Elite

Australian surfer Julian Wilson's first signature shorts with Hurley, the Phantom Julian Elite, are engineered to make you feel your fastest in the water.

Harnessing insights from one of the world’s best surfers – in tandem with Nike Innovation – Hurley applies new technology to water sports creating a new precedent in the world of surf.

The launch of the signature boardshort also kicks off Wilson’s extended relationship with the brand as a part of the Hurley and Nike family until 2020 and beyond.

“I couldn’t be happier to release my first fully fledged signature piece with Hurley,” said Wilson. “Using performance and speed as key elements, I was able to design a short that will help you unlock next-level performance while standing out from the crowd.”

Wilson’s influence updates the market-leading Phantom boardshorts with a 19-inch-long silhouette, and a design based on the highest level of surf performance.

“Speed is critical to unlocking your potential, and the Phantom Julian Elite was built to the high-flying specifications of Julian Wilson,” said Hurley VP of Innovation Bruce Moore.

Both Moore and the Hurley Innovation Team worked closely with Wilson during the design process to create a solution that enhances his surfing style.

“Julian’s style of surfing is quick, dynamic, and responsive,” said Hurley Creative Director Ryan Hurley. “We focused on the concept of speed to create the fastest short for Julian’s performance in the water.”

The Phantom Julian Elite features a responsive Livewire waistband that reacts to the body’s movement for maximum performance. Its free-floating rigid magwire contracts when engaged for a locked-down fit that holds up in fast conditions. A double layer of 60-percent stretch Phantom fabric enables waistband flexibility, while an exclusive construction technique stabilizes the multi-directional fabric.

In addition, the Phantom Julian Elite exhibits the best of Phantom benefits: ultra lightweight with bonded seams, DWR water repellency and recycled fabric — made using an average of 12 plastic bottles per pair.
