Sports Direct is entering the Slovak market by taking over the space
Gigasport left in June.
The leading sports retailer in the U.K. will
lease one of the largest units in the Avion Shopping Park in Bratislava,
following a recent opening of its first branch in Košice.
The 2,300 sqm
store in Avion will be operational by the end of September. The
shopping center is currently expanding and its total leasable area
should reach 100,000 sqm. Gigasport withdrew from the Czech and Slovak
markets in June due to poor economic results.
While in Slovakia the
Kastner & Öhler group had only one Gigasport shop, in the Czech
Republic there were eleven. Sports Direct operates a network of 470
outlets around Europe and sells Nike, Reebok, Umbro, Fila, Everlast,
Lonsdale and Slazenger goods. Decathlon is another sports retail chain
planning to enter Slovakia and open outlets in Bratislava, Banská
Bystrica and Košice.
