Available in a free version on the App Store, the CycleMap application had already been downloaded in over 75 countries to date. Designed for cycling enthusiasts and Sunday riders alike, CycleMap brilliantly indexes the entire network of the most popular bike paths in the world, that is to say more than 1,346,200 kilometres… or the equivalent of 33.5 times the Earth's circumference!
"CycleMap is an indispensable application for planning and enjoying bike rides, be it in Quebec, Canada, the United States, Japan, Sweden or elsewhere across the planet. We have users the world over and we strive on a daily basis to add new paths and features in order to become a benchmark for all cyclists," asserts David Boudreault, president and co-founder of Ratomic Lab, the firm behind CycleMap.
As for CycleMap's PRO version available within the same app, it offers a wide range of additional features such as the length and type of track, its surface (stone dust, asphalt, paved, etc.), the elevation of the paths and a tool that gives a more comprehensive range of itineraries. Users can also save their search history and favourites, find the nearest bike shop if they run into a problem and record maps and travel itineraries in offline mode so they can access them when the Internet isn't available.
BIKE SHARING
CycleMap PRO also enables bike-share fans to check the availability of public bicycles in 176 cities around the world. "We have indexed 9,300 bike-share stations, which means 85,000 bikes. Moreover, CycleMap shows users where the closest station is located for either picking up or dropping off a bike like the BIXI for example," Mr. Boudreault points out.
FROM QUEBEC CITY TO THE WORLD
CycleMap is the brainchild of Olivier Carbonneau, who came up with the idea about two years ago when consulting the PDF file for bike paths in his hometown. "At the time, there weren't any available options for mobile phones. But the data was there so if you're going to develop an application for the one specific area, you may as well do it for the entire globe!" explains the technology director and cofounder of CycleMap, a professional programmer from the video game industry.
In September 2013, he crossed paths with David Boudreault, a seasoned entrepreneur working at the time as a project manager for a video game company. David was quick to join in the adventure and the two Sunday cyclists worked hard day and night to develop the 2.0 version. The two entrepreneurs made up an amazing team and succeeded, during the following months, in making tremendous inroads with their application. While one detected the tiny imperfections, the other corrected them.
"More and more countries have put in place open data, but it is all in different languages and formats! It's quite a job piecing everything together and then rendering the data useable," Olivier Carbonneau adds.
CycleMap is available in a free and PRO ($4.99) version for iPhone and iPad on the App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/app/id528869692). An Android version is currently under development and should be released by the end of the year.
