About 50 people were injured in clashes between demonstrators and police
in Bangladesh on Tuesday as protests over low pay by the country’s
garment workers entered their fourth day. The violence came after about
400 of the country’s 5,000 garment factories were forced to shut on
Monday as thousands of protesting workers demanded a $100-a-month
minimum wage.
On Monday, workers took to the streets for a third
day, blocking major roads and smashing some vehicles in the Gazipur and
Savar industrial zones, on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka.
Overnight negotiations on Monday failed to end a dispute over low wages
as garment factory owners reopened plants.
Bangladesh’s apparel
industry has been under a spotlight after several deadly episodes,
including the collapse of a building housing factories in April that
killed more than 1,130 people. The monthly minimum wage in Bangladesh is
currently $38.
