May 20, 2014 – Vancouver, BC: The spring Innate Wet Coast Social in support of the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition received a significant funding boost from KEEN Footwear with a challenge to attending businesses.
The spring 2014 Innate Wet Coast Social is a venue for local businesses and civil organizations to explore how good ecology is good business. The social will feature a presentation by special guest Wade Davis, a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, as well as presentations by SWCC, SVI and others.
Today, KEEN announced their support with an outright gift of $3000 and an additional $3000 available for matching funds to be pledged during the Innate Wet Coast Social.
“The Keen brand promise focuses on building Stronger Communities and a Healthier Planet,” noted representative Kirk Richardson. “Our Hybrid Care investments are guided by that promise. The grassroots Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition in Northwestern British Columbia is a living, breathing example of that spirit. We are proud to support them in defense of clean water and in building a strong, sustainable community.”
The Skeena headwaters are the birthplace of the Skeena, Nass and Stikine Rivers. These three rivers are among British Columbia’s greatest salmon rivers. The Skeena is the second longest river in British Columbia.
The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition was founded in 2004 by a diverse group of people living and working in the Skeena river watershed. Their mission is to cultivate a sustainable future from a sustainable environment rooted in their culture and thriving wild salmon ecosystem. Believing that clean water is essential for healthy communities, The SWCC actively communicates with their membership and all levels of government when proposed development plans may compromise a sustainable regional economy.
Organizations like the Canadian outdoor retailer Mountain Equipment Coop have been advocates for the Skeena and the need for fresh water. MEC was the largest sponsor of the awareness-raising Spirit of the Skeena Swim 2009, when Ali Howard became the first person to navigate the entire length of the Skeena River from the Sacred Headwaters to the Pacific Ocean.
This commitment continues with a partnership between MEC and the Canadian Freshwater Alliance to amplify the voice of the freshwater community on issues that affect the rivers, lakes and streams that we all enjoy. The $100,000 commitment from MEC will strengthen the capacity of grassroots groups to ensure that there will always be freshwater landscapes to play, inspire and sustain us.
“We’re thrilled to contribute in our own modest way to the Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition,” stated Innate VP of Sales Robyn Gibson. “ There is a fun draw with multiple items to bid on. We want to make sure that none of KEEN’s generous pledge remains at the end of the night.”
