Crowdfunding : Kickstarter Surpasses $1 Billion in Pledges

The crowdfunding site Kickstarter surpassed $1 billion in pledges on March 3.

The company, which started in April 2009 when 40 people pledged $1,084 to fund seven projects, has been embraced by entrepreneurs as a great product development tool. It has helped spawn start-ups such as Kammok of Austin, Texas and become an important tool for more established companies like Klymit and Sole looking for ways to test new concepts and stretch their capital.

Kickstarter said 5.7 million people have used its site to pledge $1 billion for creative projects.
