The Awards honor the companies and researchers who develop the innovative products that drive the textile industry. This year’s Top 10 winners include: Innovative manufacturing and production technologies; novel insulation solutions; and advancements in textiles for a variety of markets.
Kathy Swantko founder of the FabricLink Network, explains the motivation behind the annual awards, “Textiles are in everything we do, and yet they are all too often overlooked. These awards recognize the innovators in the high tech specialty fabric markets. The awards are presented to recognize the designers, manufacturers and suppliers, who are leading the way with new products and technologies.”
The companies and products winning the 2014-15 awards include: 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation; Hohenstein and Freudenbergfor the first Nonwoven Polyester Lining Material; Watershed Geosynthetics’ HydroTurf™ CS and HydroTurf™ Z; Mount Vernon Mills’ FR AMTEX™ PLUS and Carhartt Wind Fighter™ Technology for Carhartt’s FR Extremes™ Arctic Outerwear; Outlast Technologies’ “Universe” PCM/Down Filling Material; Schoeller®-WB400 soft-shells with Memory Foam; Teijin Aramid’s Flexible Carbon Nanotube Fibers; Advanced Flexible Materials’ Ultraflect™; VOORMI CORE CONSTRUCTION™; and FiberVisions’ WoolVisions™.
This year’s Top 10 Innovations can be viewed on the FabricLink.com website.
1. 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation
Breaking new ground in thermal insulation – warmth, without the downsides, 3M™ Thinsulate™ Featherless Insulation offers 600 Fill Power protection. Its loose fill down alternative mimics or surpasses the performance of natural down in fill power, loft and performance when wet.
2. Hohenstein Certifies Freudenberg’s 1st Nonwoven Polyester Lining Material
Freudenberg Interlining introduces the first nonwoven polyester lining material made from independently certified biodegradable fibers. The Freudenberg linings have been tested and certified according to procedures developed by the Hohenstein Institute.
3. HydroTurf™ CS and HydroTurf™ Z
Economically and environmentally friendly erosion armoring technology developed by Watershed Geosynthetics, Alpharetta, Georgia, is designed to reduce construction and long-term maintenance costs in geotechnical applications.
4. Mount Vernon FR AMTEX™ PLUS and Carhartt Wind Fighter™ Technology: FR Extremes™ Arctic Outerwear
Mount Vernon FR and Carhartt, launched Carhartt Flame-Resistant (FR) Extremes™ Arctic outerwear with AMTEX™ PLUS and Wind Fighter™ Technology for flame-resistant wear in extreme weather conditions without added weight or bulk.
5. Outlast Technologies’ “Universe” – a PCM/Down Filling Material
Outlast Technologies, the leader in phase-change materials (PCMs), launches ‘Universe’ a PCM/down that adds lightness, fluffy volume and naturalness, while the Outlast® PCM viscose fibers regulate and optimize the climate comfort.
6. Schoeller®-WB400soft-shells with Memory Foam
Developed by Swiss company Schoeller Textil AG, the new Schoeller®-WB-400 soft-shells with memory foam will be offered in natural shades like warm beige tones and neutral stone grey for Winter 2016-17, for a trend combining nature and technology.
7. Teijin Aramid’s Flexible Carbon Nanotube Fibers
Researchers at Teijin Aramid, along with research at Rice University in the US, have launched a new generation of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers that can be created through a wet-spinning process. The new fibers have the potential to inspire future super fiber developments in such industries as aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and wearable smart clothing.
8. Ultraflect™
Developed by Chicago-based AFM Heatsheets®, Ultraflect™ is an innovative, reflective, lightweight (35 GSM) polyester woven insulation fabric with a single reflective-insulation layer that provides protection in a more compact form.
9. VOORMI CORE CONSTRUCTION™
VOORMI®’s weather protective textile technology, CORE CONSTRUCTION™ Technology, that delivers the first true single-layer fabric with an integrated weatherproof membrane.
10. WoolVisions™
CoolVisions®, a disperse-dyeable polypropylene fiber produced by FiberVisions®, adds WoolVisions™, an intimate blend of dyeable polypropylene and wool, to its range of superior performance products.
FabricLink.com and TheTechnicalCenter.com are on-line textile resources, which make up the FabricLink Network. FabricLink.com (trade-to-consumer) and TheTechnicalCenter.com (trade-to-trade) provide information about new products and marketing opportunities for specialty textiles, textile-based products and services. The two sites offer valuable content and technical information; new releases on innovations; fabric descriptions; usage and care; supplier history; and, key contacts. Seven Searchable indexes make the FabricLink Network websites the “go to” resource for developers of textiles, fashion designers, and researchers. In addition, the Network offers effective platforms for all companies to reach other businesses within the supply chain and the consumer.
