Steamboat Springs, CO (November 21, 2012) -- Chaos Sales Representative, Tom McGraw and his family visit Swaziland Orphanages and Care-Points each year. This past summer his daughter Lauren and twin sons, Ian and Shaun, made the trip. Lauren sends a thank you for the new hats delivered to three of these Care-Points in a very rural part of the country. This is a thank you from our team to Tom’s family for their hard work and service over the years in a very underserved region of the world.
Swaziland is a land-locked, partially mountainous, country in South Africa, bordered to the north, south and west by South Africa, and to the east by Mozambique. Swaziland is a member of the Southern African Development Company, the African Union and the Common Wealth of Nations. About 75% of the population is employed in subsistence farming and 60% of the population live on less than the equivalent of US $1.25 per day. The organization that Tom and his family travel with is AIM (Adventures in Missions) who serve the community in many ways, including setting up Care-Points with a purpose of providing at least one meal per day to the most impoverished in these dry and cold rural areas. The AIDS Pandemic and poverty have resulted in 100’s of thousands of children going hungry each day.
Every summer for the past eight years, the McGraw team has been taking Chaos Beanies to Swaziland to give out to the orphans. Chaos headwear donates beanies along with other donated samples from the corporate offices. Swaziland has the highest rate of AIDS in the world per capita and there are close to 200,000orphans in the country with a population of about a million. Although it is a common misconception that it is always hot in South Africa, due to the surrounding mountains, it gets very cold there in the winter season.
Lauren McGraw wrote, “The beanies are always a welcomed and loved gift to the kids. You can let them know that I personally helped distribute the hats to these beautiful kids. The kids at the Care-Point were so excited and loved showing them off. Plus, their winter is June-Aug and is chilly cold, with an average temp between 40-50's and can fall below zero at night. So the beanies were a welcome source of comfort and warmth.”
In addition to the McGraw family program, Chaos Headwear is also a contractor with a very special hand knit program in Peru. Javier Dam, director of the Head Knitter’s Guild, believes the contract with Chaos, and other like-minded companies, has beenvital to helping improve the livelihood of the families in the remote Alti-Planos regions of Peru.
