Halyard, the UK-based manufacturer of bespoke marine exhaust systems, has been commissioned by Gunfleet Marine to design, build and install three exhaust silencer systems for the first of its new bluewater cruising yachts – Gunfleet 58-01, Gunfleet 58-02 and Gunfleet 58-03.
Gunfleet is a relatively new company based in Colchester, Essex. Its newest build, the Gunfleet 58, is due to make its UK debut at the PSP Southampton Boat Show in September. Halyard is a marine engineering company dedicated to the reduction of engine noise in the pleasure craft, superyacht and commercial marine sectors.
From the design stage, right through to the construction of the exhaust system, Halyard’s in-house design team worked closely with Gunfleet to create an effective structure and layout solution for the 58, using standard Halyard components. The exhaust silencer systems created by Halyard will silence the yachts’ engines combustion noise by up 40 per cent, by ejecting the cooling water, and removing all exhaust gases.
To ensure a comfortable cruise for passengers and crew, and to help prevent seasickness, an Aquadrive system has also been fitted. The Aquadrive aligns the propeller shaft drive with the engine, correctly, to diminish structural vibration disruption by up to 90 per cent.
“I’ve worked with Halyard for many years, but this was the first time I was able to give them a job where they had a completely clean sheet to start with, something I wish I had been able to do years ago,” says Nick Creed, commercial director at Gunfleet Marine.
“The Halyard team came up with a straightforward solution, which has produced an outstandingly quiet engine and exhaust installation that has been completely certified by the engine manufacturers without any issues or any need for any modifications, right out of the box.”
