Media : POWDER Hires Online Editor and Video Editor

SAN CLEMENTE, CA (January 21, 2014) - With the February issue now on newsstands and the launch of the Sochi Olympics microsite on Powder.com, POWDER is pleased to announce the additions of Julie Brown and Rupert Walker to the editorial staff. A former POWDER intern and contract online editor, Brown takes the full-time reins of the online editor position. Walker becomes the first full-time video editor in the history of the title.

"Certainly, the digital space continues to evolve at a rapid clip, so it's exciting to hire the caliber of talent that Julie and Rupert possess," says POWDER Editor John Stifter. "Julie's diligence and Rupert's creativity speak for themselves, but, more than anything, they're fun, hard-working people that will continue POWDER's ethos of journalistic authenticity and having a good time on and off the slopes."

Brown, 29, just completed her master's degree from U.C. Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. Born and raised in Tahoe, she cut her ski teeth at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. With the exception of time spent at U.C. San Diego as an undergrad, she's lived her entire life in the Sierras, working as a daily beat reporter and editor at various Tahoe publications. Most recently, Brown spent her summer break interning at POWDER and rolled that experience into a contract position while pursuing her master's, specializing in long form narrative writing and multimedia.

"I've learned so much from the editors over the last six months, and we've worked really hard to produce innovative and beautiful projects online," says Brown. "I'm so excited to continue that momentum and take Powder.com to new heights."

A British Columbia vagabond of sorts, Walker, 27, grew up skiing Whistler and Interior B.C.'s Kimberly before calling Vancouver and Victoria home. After earning a bachelor's degree in marketing, Walker pursued his interest in film by teaching himself the nuances of composition, cinematography, and editing. He worked and shot at Whistler's Powder Mountain Heli and Cat Skiing, in addition to filming and editing mountain bike edits for Bontrager, Chromag, and Camp of Champions. This past fall, Walker edited the entire 14th Annual Powder Awards show, as well as a series of Powder TV clips. He'll be splitting video editing duties with POWDER's sister publication, BIKE.

"Being able to document a sport I love while representing, arguably, the most prestigious and influential publication in skiing's history is a dream come true," says Walker.

Brown and Walker have relocated to Southern California and are based out of the POWDER office in San Clemente. Brown can be reached at Julie@powder.com, and Walker at Rupert@powder.com.
