GoPro Names Seasoned Technology Executive as President

GoPro has brought aboard Tony Bates the former top executive at Microsoft and CEO at Skype to be the company’s second in command.

Bates will add to the ranks of the camera maker his expertise in expanding businesses while it prepares for its initial public offering.

Bates will be GoPro’s president and a board of directors’ member. Peter Gotcher, an investor was named on Wednesday to the board at GoPro as well.

CEO and founder of GoPro, Nicholas Woodman said he was excited to have the two seasoned veterans of technology on his team.

Peter and Tony’s passion and great experience will help the company realize its vision for enabling clients to capture and share their engaging content.

Woodman said that Bates is set to focus on scaling the quickly growing media operations at GoPro. Videos are featured on GoPro’s website that were shot through the use of its cameras and Woodman could be looking to expand upon that.

In 2010, Bates became Skype’s CEO and continued to run the company after Microsoft purchased it. During the period, Skype introduced services that were paid for and saw monthly users jump from 145 million to 170 million in the year he joined the company.

At Microsoft, he was transitioned later into a role of business development. Bates left Microsoft when Satya Nadella become the new CEO, a role Bates seemingly was passed over for.

GoPro, through a prepared statement, said Bates, represents everything exciting to me in a business. It has incredible products, a brand that is world-renowned, compelling content and above everything else, amazing people making it happen.

The resilient and small cameras from GoPro have seen a great deal of competition, but remained the option people think of at the time they are looking for a camera that will record video through whatever conditions without being in the way.

Being able to maintain that is critical for GoPro as it nears its IPO and Bates might be the key to helping it move forward from that point.
