Award :Suunto earns double recognition from one of the world’s most recognized design award programs

Ogden, UT, Feb 19, 2013 -
Suunto, a global leader in sports precision instruments, is proud to announce winning two awards from Good Design for the Suunto Ambit GPS watch and the Suunto Core Alu. Good Design is the world’s longest-running, most prestigious and most recognized design program.  It is organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.
Good Design covers new consumer products and each year accepts several thousand submissions from manufacturers and industrial and graphic design firms from more than 48 countries. All award-winning products and graphic designs are published in Good Design’s yearbook for 2012-2013 and are listed on The Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s website.

“Since Good Design only recognizes the world’s top tier designs, it is exciting that two of Suunto’s top products received awards,” says Nora Stowell, Suunto USA Vice President and Business Director.

Good Design chose the Suunto Ambit GPS watch for its sleek design, specialized outdoor features, advanced training functions and its ability to be upgraded for free with new technology. The Ambit was fully designed and manufactured in Finland by Thomas Hinskens, senior industrial designer at Suunto.

“We wanted the design of the Suunto Ambit to be able to withstand the test of time,” explains Hinskens. “We didn’t go for trendy, but rather with design elements that are more subtle and will age nicely.”

The Suunto Core Alu received recognition based on its design inspired by the original 1936 March Compass and Suunto’s 75 year heritage in precision outdoor instruments. Suunto’s Core Alu designer, Timo Yliluoma, simplified the front watch face cover to an all-metal casing with contrasting clear graphics and a comfortable wristband, resulting in an ageless timepiece with a contemporary fit and finish.

Suunto was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish orienteer and inventor of the liquid-filled field compass. Since then Suunto has been at the forefront of design and innovation for sports watches, dive computers and instruments used by adventure seekers all over the globe. From the top of the mountain to the bottom of the sea, Suunto physically and mentally equips outdoor adventurers to conquer new territory.
Suunto’s headquarters and manufacturing plant is in Vantaa, Finland. Employing more than 400 people worldwide, Suunto products are sold in over 100 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Amer Sports Corporation along with its sister brands Salomon, Arc’teryx, Atomic, Wilson, Precor, and Mavic.
