GREENVILLE, S.C. , Aug 29, 2013 -
Wave Sport, Dagger, Adventure Technology, Bomber Gear, and
Wilderness Systems will support the top freestyle kayakers in the world
at the ICF Freestyle Kayaking World Championships at Nantahala Outdoor Center
(NOC) in Bryson City, N.C., on September 2-8, 2013. Considered the most
elite freestyle kayaking event in the world, this year marks the first
time since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga., that world championship
kayaking will return to the United States.
More than 300 of the most skilled kayakers will head to the Nantahala
River’s 2013 Wave to showcase their best freestyle moves and compete
for the title of world champion in front of an expected audience of more
than 10,000. The kayaking competition will take place on a new
custom-built river wave at Nantahala Outdoor Center. Spectators and
athletes alike will enjoy NOC’s revolutionary new paperless scoring
system that will show the results immediately after each run. The
real-time scoring system will help make freestyle kayaking more
spectator-friendly and more suitable for a live television broadcast.
“We are incredibly proud to sponsor the 2013 World Championships, the
highest level of freestyle competition in the world. It is a rare
opportunity to have such a high caliber paddling event in our own
backyard. NOC has put a tremendous amount of effort into increasing the
level of professionalism and organization at this event, including
developing the new real-time scoring system and perfecting the 2013
Wave,” said Cheri McKenzie, chief marketing officer at Confluence Watersports.
“Elite athletes from Team Wave Sport and Team Dagger will be competing
in the event, and five Confluence brands are sponsoring competitions and
activities throughout the week. We are excited to play an integral role
in making the World Championships event a huge success.”
More than just a competition, the seven-day event is truly a
celebration of the outdoor recreation culture for everyone from
world-class athletes to entry-level outdoor enthusiasts. Friendly
competitions, demos, and events throughout the week will give kayaking
enthusiasts of all skill levels a chance to participate in the action
and win prizes. Live music and art exhibitors will provide
entertainment, and guided raft trips, zip line tours, mountain bike
rentals, and other activities will also be available through NOC.

2013 Freestyle World Championship Sponsor Events:
Wave Sport is sponsoring the
Wave Sport Wesser Falls Extreme Race. The best extreme kayakers will
negotiate the fastest line through class V Wesser Falls, competing for
cash prizes. The race runs through the 2013 Wave and finishes in Fontana
Lake.
The Dagger Dash Race will start
at Nantahala Falls and end at the NOC Founder’s Bridge. This fun,
free-for-all race will begin with the competitors racing to find their
ideal kayak to run Nantahala Falls. Kayaks of all types and sizes will
be lined up at the start for participants to vie for, from inflatable
kayaks to play boats and creek boats. A mix of luck and skill will help
determine the winners who will be awarded cash prizes.
In addition to The Dagger Dash, the brand is sponsoring two other
events throughout the week. Dagger is also presenting the 8-Ball Race
through the 2013 Wave, where competitors race head to head through
gates, trying not to get knocked off course by the other kayakers in an
effort to win a Dagger Mamba 8.1 kayak. The Dagger RPM Stern Squirt
Session encourages kayakers to dust off their long boats, pull on their
neoprene, and compete in a retro rodeo. A Dagger RPM kayak will be given
away and points will be given to the kayaker who performs the most
pirouettes, surfs, and stern squirts, with additional points awarded for
style.
In the Bomber Gear Dress for
Success Challenge, teams of two will gear up and relay race across
current for a chance to win a Bomber Gear prize package. The event will
take place just below the 2013 Wave and is open to paddlers of all
ability levels. Paddlers looking to test their whitewater SUP skills can
compete in the Bomber Gear SUP Race, where stand up paddlers will race
through the 2013 Wave on the Nantahala for a chance to win prizes from
Bomber Gear.
For kayakers who enjoy a good game of basketball, Adventure Technology
is combining the two sports in AT Canoe Ball, where teams of three will
play basketball in kayaks, competing to score the most points and an
ultimate swag bag.
Wilderness Systems
will have kayaks available to demo at the beautiful, tranquil Fontana
Lake just a short walk downstream of the 2013 Wave. Those looking for a
bit of flat water competition are invited to compete in the Wilderness
Systems Challenge, where teams of three kayakers will navigate a course
on Fontana Lake, vying to win a Wilderness Systems prize pack. Both the
demo and the competition are free and available to paddlers of all
abilities.
