Suunto unveils Connected Family product line for sports and adventures

Ogden, UT – July 11, 2014—Suunto, a global leader in sports precision instruments, is launching its new Suunto Connected Family product line. Available to users in September, the Connected Family line is Suunto’s first Bluetooth® Smart compatible offering and consists of a new Suunto Movescount App, Suunto Ambit3 Peak and Suunto Ambit3 Sport GPS watches and the Suunto Smart Sensor for heart rate monitoring.

The unique idea behind the first Suunto Ambit GPS watch, first launched in 2012, was to combine advanced functionality for outdoor adventures with advanced functionality for performance training. The new Suunto Ambit3 Peak and Suunto Ambit3 Sport GPS watches continue to build on this tradition by allowing users to track their sports, adventures and everyday moves with the watches. In addition, with the free Suunto Movescount App, users can upload exercises, change watch settings, get notifications, enrich, relive and share sports moments and adventures wirelessly while on the go through a smartphone. Users can also simply use the new app as a stand-alone tool for tracking and sharing their adventures.

Suunto Movescount App for iPhone and iPad

The new, free Suunto Movescount App is the heart of the Suunto Connected Family and is a stand-alone app that enables easy tracking and sharing of activities, regardless of whether or not the user is a Suunto watch owner. The app will first be available for iPhone and iPad, and can be downloaded from the App Store at the beginning of September. Availability details for the Android version will be announced at a later date.

Enrich, relive and share the experience

With the Suunto Movescount App, users can take photos that show real-time speed, distance or other details. The app also offers a great way to showcase adventures to friends through social media. With one tap, users can turn any move into a “Suunto Movie” – an animation of the journey visualized with a 3D map, where highlights and photos of the adventure are embedded along the track. Suunto Movies can even be created from moves done in the past, as long as they are stored in Movescount. To see an example, check out the Suunto Movie of Kilian Jornet’s recent record ascent of Denali here.

Smart Mobile Connection for Suunto Ambit3 watches

When paired with any Ambit3 watch, the Suunto Movescount App turns the GPS watch into a multifunctional smart watch. You can use the watch to keep time and GPS data updated while on the go, wirelessly upload moves, or use the Movescount App to change watch settings on the spot. Users can also receive call and text notifications on the watch, meaning it is no longer necessary to stop training in order to see who is calling. When cycling, the phone can be mounted on a bike where it can be turned into a second display of the watch and not drain the phones battery by using GPS on the phone.

Suunto Ambit3 Sport – the multisport experience: specialized features for running, swimming and cycling

The new Suunto Ambit3 Sport packs all of the features needed for running, swimming, cycling and multisport training. The GPS provides accurate pace, route navigation and tracking while the heart rate monitor allows training within an ideal zone. The Ambit3 Sport has all of the familiar features of the Ambit2 S yet is also equipped with new, sport-specific features, including:

Swimming:

As a highly-requested new feature, the Ambit3 Sport records heart rate while swimming. The heart rate belt with the new Suunto Smart Sensor, sold with the Ambit3 Sport HR, stores heart rate data during the swim and, once out of the water, transfers it directly to the Ambit3 Sport.

Recovery time and activity monitoring:

The Ambit3 Sport provides daily activity monitoring for a more complete estimation of total recovery time.

Ambit3 Peak – the adventure experience

The Ambit3 Peak, successor of the award-winning Suunto Ambit2,  is the new flagship of the Suunto Ambit family. This is the watch for serious adventurers and athletes – packing Suunto’s hallmark outdoor functions such as route navigation, barometric information, altimeter with FusedAlti™, 3D compass and other outdoor specific features. The Ambit3 Peak also includes all of the new functionality described above for the Ambit3 Sport.

The Ambit3 Peak has double the battery life (up to 50 hours in GPS mode) compared to Ambit3 Sport, and its tough design with glass fiber reinforced casing and stainless steel bezel make this watch ready to take a beating in any conditions – and perfect for any adventure. The Sapphire edition comes with a sapphire crystal glass for ultimate durability.

New Suunto Smart Sensor for heart rate tracking

Along with these other products, Suunto is unveiling a new solution for heart rate monitoring with the Suunto Smart Sensor. The revolutionary design makes this the smallest Bluetooth® Smart compatible heart rate sensor on the market, allowing it to track heart rate accurately with great comfort. Using Movesense™ technology, the new Suunto Smart Sensor can be attached to the new Suunto heart rate belt, or to compatible sports apparel.  When attached to the Suunto heart rate belt, the Suunto Smart Sensor now is able to record heart rate during swims. While swimming, heart rate data is stored in the sensor, and when out of water, the data is transferred wirelessly to a Ambit3 watch or Suunto Movescount App. The Suunto Smart Sensor, with the belt, will be included in the Ambit3 Peak and Ambit3 Sport HR versions. The belt can also be purchased separately and used with the Suunto Movescount App or other Bluetooth® Smart compatible devices.

Suunto Ambit3 Sport and Ambit3 Peak, as well as the new heart rate belt with the Suunto Smart Sensor and the free Suunto Movescount App will be globally available starting September 2014.
