Bikes Frames Revolution with New alloy of steel created that's as strong and light as Titanium Steel

POSTECH Scientists Create Stronger and More Lightweight Steel Alternative

In new research published in Nature, Professors Hansoo Kim and Nack J. Kim and doctoral student Sang-Heon Kim at the Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT) at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) have developed a new type of steel with improved tensile strength and lightness.

There is a growing demand for lightweight structural materials as an alternative to conventional steels which are heavy and impractical in developing future energy efficient vehicles. Studies on lightweight steels have shed light on the effectiveness of aluminum alloying in increasing the strength-to-weight ratio and reducing density. However, increasing aluminum content in lightweight steels results in poor ductility.

The research team at GIFT has found a solution to this problem by taking unconventional alloy design approach; i.e., by uniformly dispersing nanometer-sized B2 intermetallic compounds between and within the steel’s grains. B2 has been traditionally known to be a harmful phase in steels. Besides being lightweight, this new steel possesses an excellent combination of strength and ductility, which are far superior to those of traditional steels.
With this innovative approach, stronger and more ductile lightweight steels have been created, solving the long standing problem of poor ductility caused by the formation of brittle intermetallic compound particles. The team plans to work with POSCO to produce its new product later this year, ushering in a new era of high-specific-strength steels that will be lightweight and strong enough to produce fuel efficient vehicles and other transportation systems.

Founded in 1986 as the first research-oriented university in Korea, POSTECH is a young university with only 27 years of history. However, with the wholehearted support from POSCO and the POSTECH Foundation and the tireless efforts of our students, staff, researchers, and faculty, POSTECH has risen to become a leading Korean and Asian university in a short time, adding its name to the list of top universities in the world despite its comparative youthfulness.

High-impact research and high-quality education are at the heart of POSTECH. Our vision for tomorrow is that POSTECH becomes internationally recognized for its academic excellence and a global hub for pioneering new technological advances and scientific research. This is a special place where students can learn from inspiring professors and discover solutions to the world's most serious challenges through innovation and collaboration.

POSTECH has successfully recruited and retained world-class faculty members who are committed to increasing POSTECH's research capability and developing important research programs in science and technology. Our vigorous pursuit of excellence will allow us to make fundamental discoveries and technological breakthroughs that could change existing paradigms, ranging from healthcare and food to energy and the environment. At the same time, as an institution deeply committed to excellent education, we will carry forward our utmost efforts to help our students develop their dreams, make them grow, maximize their talents, and equip them with the proper training so that they can pursue and realize their professional goals.

On behalf of the POSTECH community, I thank you for visiting our website and for your interest in POSTECH. I invite you to explore this website and discover for yourselves what makes POSTECH an exceptional university.
