Beyond Coastal Earns Top Ratings from the Environmental Working Group

Earlier this summer, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) announced leading sun care brand, Beyond Coastal, one of only two sunscreen varieties to receive top ratings in both mineral and non-mineral sunscreens in their 2014 updated sunscreen guide. The 8th-annual listing put out by the independent non-profit consumer resource group provides consumers with ratings on protection levels and ingredient safety on over 1,200 sunscreens and lip balms.

The release of EWG’s 2014 ratings show all of Beyond Coastal’s three active non-mineral sunscreen formulas – Active SPF 34, Active SPF 16 and Active FaceStick SPF 30 – falling in the best 0-2 “low hazard” range, a distinction gained by only seven out of 219 non-mineral sunscreens tested. Toxicity ratings of each ingredient range on a scale from 0-10, with a lower rating indicating a relatively safer product.

Among Beyond Coastal’s most popular products, the Active Face Stick SPF 30 – favored by trail runners and surfers for its clean hands application – is one of two top rated non-mineral sunscreen sticks to receive the EWG’s best “low hazard” rating, while the multi-flavored Active Lip Balm line remains the top-rated non-mineral lip balm on the market.

A favorite among top athletes – including Beyond Coastal ultra-endurance competitor Rebecca Rusch – the water-resistant and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protecting formulas are distinguished by their 89% inactive ingredient make up – grape seed extract, jojoba oil and coconut oil to name a few – which works to protect, nourish, repair and hydrate the skin. The brand’s line of oxybenzone and paraben-free natural sunscreens and lip balms has grown in popularity among outdoor athletes since its launch into the outdoor market in 2006.

“I am always amazed by the knowledge people have about harmful ingredients manufacturers put into sunscreens” said Tom Ferries, Director of Marketing at Beyond Coastal sun care. “Watchdog websites like the Environmental Working Group are doing a tremendous job of educating consumers and providing invaluable information to those looking to select the safest, most protective sunscreen for themselves and their families. We’re appreciative of their efforts to uphold sun care safety standards and extremely proud to have Beyond Coastal rated one of the top sun care brands on the market.”

Also rated in the “low hazard” range by the EWG, Beyond Coastal’s 100% all natural mineral sunscreens – Natural SPF 30 and Natural Kids SPF 30 – feature a premium blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which provides for a clean and clear physical sun screen to shelter skin from UVA and UVB rays.

Beyond Coastal’s natural and active skin care lines are distributed across the bike, run, paddle, hiking and surf industries – they’re currently attending the popular Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida – and they’ve spread quickly into the winter ski and snow markets where their athlete ambassadors include skier McKenna Peterson.
