Team Giant-Alpecin Becomes Third Team to Use Pioneer Power Meter System as Their Training Tool

Pioneer's Cycling Power Meter to Have Broader Presence at the UCI WorldTour Level

LONG BEACH, Calif.--Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. announced its sponsorship of Team Giant-Alpecin as the official equipment supplier for its men’s and women’s cycling teams. The support includes outfitting each team’s race bicycles with the advanced dual-leg power meter crank sets and SGX-CA500 Cycle-Computer, broadening Pioneer’s presence at the UCI WorldTour. Team Giant-Alpecin is the third Pioneer sponsored team, adding to a roster that includes the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team and Team Lotto.NL-Jumbo, formerly known as the Belkin Pro Cycling Team. Team Giant-Alpecin will use the Pioneer gear in its first race of the 2015 season on January 17th at the Tour Down Under race in Australia.

“We’re extremely proud that Team Giant-Alpecin recognizes the capabilities of our power meter system to improve the performance of their athletes,” Russ Johnston, executive vice president of marketing and corporate communications, Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “We’ve worked hard to develop products that perform at the highest level in the sport. We’re fortunate to have gained respect at the UCI ProTeam level and are excited to be working with such high caliber pro cycling teams.”
Consisting of 27 male riders and 10 female riders, Team Giant-Alpecin is led by general manager Iwan Spekenbrink, who oversees many of the most talented cyclists in the world, including Marcel Kittel, John Degenkolb, Warren Barguil, and Claudia Lichtenberg. Focused on using power to enhance the performance of each rider, Team Giant-Alpecin aims to take advantage of Pioneer’s power meter and Cycle-Computer capabilities in delivering real-time information while training and/or racing at official events. The team will utilize the Pioneer system in all men’s and women’s races in the United States and Canada and in many World Tour events around the world.

“I believe training with Pioneer’s power meter system will give us the edge we need for a successful 2015 session because it will bring our riders essential information about their performance when it counts – in real time,” Iwan Spekenbrink, general manager, Team Giant-Alpecin. “It’s great to find a company that’s just as dedicated as we are. The technology we’re seeing in the Pioneer system is way beyond what we’ve used in the past and we’re really excited to start using it as an everyday tool to train our athletes.”

Pioneer’s robust power meter system produces real time, dual-leg pedaling power measurements and analysis, graphically illustrating left and right power output, pedaling stroke efficiency, power loss, force vector analysis, and torque, in addition to cadence, heart rate, GPS positioning, speed, distance, elevation gain/loss, barometric pressure, ambient temperature, and more. At the heart of the system are two proprietary strain gauge crank-arm monitors developed by Pioneer that provide the highest power recording rate (on both legs) using twelve different points (every 30 degrees) on a single 360 degree pedaling stroke.
