Award : K2 BackDrop Skis Win Outside Magazine’s 2013 Gear of the Year Award

Hitting newsstands nationwide this month, the 2013 Winter Buyer’s Guide by Outside Magazine awards the new 2012/13 K2 BackDrop skis with Gear of the Year honors in the backcountry ski category.

Outside describes the design and purpose of the BackDrop best. “K2 has refined its proven recipe for a powder ski- a perfect blend of rocker and sidecut combined with a bit of carbon fiber- with fantastic results. It’s also light enough to tour with, thanks to that lattice of carbon in the tail and forebody. The result is a go-anywhere, shred-anything ski that craves powder but can handle resort chop without complaint.”

Finding it’s home in K2’s BackSide collection, the BackDrop is intelligently designed with a superlight construction for optimal uphill efficiency combined with an impressive 112mm footprint for maximum float and versatile downhill performance.   The result is a ski equally at home touring in the backcountry or making laps at the resort. Other features include K2’s SnoPhobic snow-repelling topsheet to further reduce weight on the ascent and All-Terrain Rocker technology paired with a powder-specific tip for stability in variable conditions.

“Catlike quickness, and it floats like a cork,” one Outside Magazine tester said. “Requires minimal skier input to smear, slash, or rail any turn.”

“The easiest thing to say about the Backdrop,” says Buyer’s Guide Editor Sam Moulton, “is that it's just right. They're extremely fun in soft snow, light enough for all-day tours, but with enough guts to ski hard inbounds. If you're looking for one ski to do it all on both sides of the rope, the Backdrop just might be it.”
The BackDrop received a 4.5 out of 5 for versatility and a 4 out of 5 for power in Outside’s review. It was also recognized for being compatible with just about any binding, which is not the case with other skis in this market. Furthermore, the option of pre-trimmed climbing skins for $200 was noted as an added bonus for quickly and easily affixing into the BackDrop’s tip and tail holes.

“Winning Outside’s Gear of the Year in the backcountry category is beyond a privilege,” said K2’s Mike Gutt. “We have stayed true to this fast-growing backcountry-focused market since the late 90’s, when it became a dedicated category for K2.  This award validates K2’s approach to innovating backcountry products for the emerging needs of this category.”
