Speedo is supporting a new project that will combine biotechnology and
laser technology to develop new and sustainable textile processing
techniques as well as new creative patterns and design ideas.
The idea
is to use lasers as a design tool on fabrics before and after they are
treated with enzymes for color and 3-D effects. By employing lasers and
enzymes, the process will also reduce chemical waste and the use of
energy and water.
Funded by Britain’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, the project involves a group of post-graduate students from the
De Montfort and Loughborough Universities. On the industrial side,
Speedo is participating along with Camira Fabrics and Teresa Green Design. Speedo says it recycles 90 percent of its waste and is working
toward zero waste.
