Stamford, Connecticut – January 5, 2015 — LOWA Boots is planning a very visible and strong presence at the 20th annual Ouray Ice Festival, the largest such festival in North America, that will take place January 8-11, 2015 in Ouray, Colorado.  For the third year running, LOWA will sponsor the Hari Berger Speed Climbing Competition to honor the legendary athlete who won three Ice Climbing World Championships while wearing LOWA boots.

Hari Berger was an all around champion competition ice climber before he lost his life in 2006 in an accident while climbing in Austria…but his legacy lives on.  LOWA’s sponsorship of the event with a $7000 purse doubles the Festival’s cash prize opportunities. The Competition will be held on Sunday, January 11. There will be individual men’s and women’s classes, each with $2000 in first place prizes, second place of $1000 and $500 for the third place finishers.

Amid the festival-like atmosphere, the LOWA boot tent will be stocked for event participants to test drive world-class demo product including their signature Ice Comp IP GTX® as well as men’s and ladies Weisshorn GTX® and Mountain Expert GTX® EVO models.  Looking ahead to warmer weather, visitors to the tent will also be able to check out LOWA’s line-up of rock climbing shoes including the new women’s Sparrow.

There will be no shortage of LOWA ambassadors. Four-time Climbing World Champion Ines Papert will compete on her LOWA boots and will be visible in clinics, on the mountain and in the LOWA tent. Carlos Buhler, one of the most accomplished mountain climbers in the world specializes in high-standard mountaineering characterized by small teams, no oxygen, minimal gear and equipment on ascents of difficult routes in challenging conditions.  Colorado climber Chad Peele guides in and around the Ouray Ice Park, is a lead guide and supervisor for Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI) and is a certified Rock and Alpine Guide through the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA).
The boot tent team will be led by Chad Gallwitz, LOWA’s experienced sales representative in the Rocky Mountains. Assisting Chad and Carlos will be Christian McConnell from LOWA’s U.S. office.
