Business news : Aluminium outboards and ski-boats lead sales gains in US

Retail sales up 4.3 per cent for Q1, while wholesale shipments are flat with last year

Retail sales of traditional powerboats were up 4.3 per cent for the first quarter on a rolling 12-month basis, according to data from the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Wholesale shipments of boats from manufacturers to dealers were about flat with last year.

The US association reported that smaller boats led gains in retail sales, offsetting losses in larger boat segments. Registrations of ski-boats were up 9.4 per cent, outboard boats were up 4.8 per cent, while jet boats were up 27 per cent and personal watercraft rose 7.5 per cent on a rolling-12-month, year-over-year comparison.

The South Atlantic region, which represents 24.3 per cent of the US market, saw retail sales rise by 5.2 per cent.

Relative to wholesale levels, retail sales of aluminum outboard boats were lower for the first time in four quarters, suggesting dealers are starting to replenish inventories after consecutive quarters of running lean.

The NMMA said that wholesale shipments of traditional powerboats were “relatively unchanged” with 0.4 per cent growth for the first quarter. Corresponding dollars were up 8.5 per cent and average prices were up 12.7 per cent.  Wholesale shipments of skiboats were up 10.8 per cent, while aluminum outboards were up 6.3 per cent. “Together, they represent the bulk of traditional powerboats sold at wholesale and offset slowdowns in all other boat segments, which were coming off highs in 2012,” said the NMMA in a statement.

While cruiser shipments fell 17.9  per cent compared to the prior year, production was still at the second highest level recorded since 2010, said the statement.
