Recycled Silver-Based Product Provides Increased Durability and Odor Reduction

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (January 19, 2015) – Microban® International, Ltd (www.microban.com), the global leader in built-in antimicrobial product protection, is reinforcing its commitment to the outdoor category with the launch of its SilverShield technology for footwear and apparel this month at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. The silver-based formula provides increased durability and odor reduction, reducing 99.9 percent of odor-causing bacteria after more than 25 home launderings. The introduction of SilverShield builds upon Microban’s 20-year relationship with the outdoor community and brands.  Microban will display its new technology and brand partners at booth #155-417.

In a recent study, consumer products treated with alternative silver antimicrobial offerings were laundered and tested for durability of antibacterial efficacy.  The study found that the leading silver antimicrobial technologies available to the market failed to withstand the rigors of true home launderings.  Microban’s SilverShield combines the natural antimicrobial power of silver with a unique carrier system that durably adheres to fabrics.  This combination results in a finish that is highly resistant to wash and wear.

The chart ( on left top) summarizes efficacy results of laundered samples. In sum, only SilverShield treated fabric exhibited a reduction of Staphylococcus aureus after 25 home launderings.

“Outdoor consumers are constantly looking for extended comfort, performance and value. Our technology keeps textiles free from odor for longer periods and enhances the durability of the product for reliable performance no matter what the adventure,” said Richard Chapman, global vice president of marketing at Microban International.

Microban’s SilverShield is formulated to stop the growth of microorganisms by interrupting bacterial metabolic processes, inhibiting microbe proliferation. It keeps textiles fresher by preventing the growth of bacteria, and reducing the breakdown of organic soils that can lead to odor buildup on fabrics.

Ever mindful of the ecological impact of textiles and textile processing, Microban strives to develop antimicrobial technologies from sustainable sources.  Its SilverShield is manufactured using recycled silver, helping to reduce landfill burden and the need to mine for new sources of silver.  In addition, it has been fine tuned to reduce the amount of silver required to effectively treat textiles, further improving the sustainability, as well as cost of the treatment.

Microban’s SilverShield has undergone extensive independent laboratory testing, has a long history of safe use, and is registered with the EPA for all applications for which it is used. Additionally, nanoparticles are not used in any Microban antimicrobial formulas. Microban is a bluesign® system partner.
