business news : American boats manufacturer Crownline to lay off majority of workforce

The Illinois boat builder, saying the layoffs are temporary, blames “unusual and calamitous weather patterns”

Crownline Boats in West Frankfort, Illinois, says it will lay off most of its workforce beginning June 17. The sterndrive builder said that all of its 206 workers would either be laid off or have their hours reduced.

The owner, Leisure Properties LLC, released a statement to local media.  “Unusual and calamitous weather patterns throughout large areas of the United States have resulted in an unpredictable downturn in the market for stern drive boats such as those manufactured by Crownline,” said the statement. “It is presently anticipated that the layoffs will be temporary.”

“Hopefully it’s just a normal layoff for the summer,” Tom Jordan, mayor of West Frankfort, told The Southern newspaper. “They generally laid off workers for a few weeks or a month in late summer or early fall then called them back to resume production for the season. Hopefully that’s what this is, but I know luxury items have taken a hit in this economy.”

Jordan said the town will do what it can to help the boat builder. “We support Crownline and if there is anything we can do, we will,” he said.

Last year, BRP laid off 340 workers when it shut down its boatbuilding facility in nearby Benton. The manufacturer of Sea-Doo and Evinrude decided to discontinue its jet-boat line.
