Linus Bike, a city bike designer, comments on the recent increase of bike sharing programs that are popping up in cities all over the world.

On May 3, Linus Bike, a city bike designer, releases a statement on an article published on TreeHugger.com that discusses the increasing number of bike sharing programs that are being implemented in cities all over the world.

According to the article, “more than 500 cities in 49 countries host advanced bike-sharing programs, with a combined fleet of over 500,000 bicycles.”

Urban transport advisor, Peter Midgley, stated in the article that “bike sharing has experienced the fastest growth of any mode of transport in the history of this planet.”

These programs allow those without a bike to be able to get around their respective city. Participants pay either a daily, weekly, monthly or annual membership fee. They are then able to pick up a bicycle that is locked to a well-marked bike rack or electronic docking station for a short ride which is typically an “hour or less,” according to the article.

Bike sharing programs have always been more frequently seen in European countries however, North American countries have been recently implementing more and more bike sharing initiatives in their respective major cities. Montreal, a Canadian city, opened its first bike-sharing program in 2009. It now has 5,120 bicycles in its fleet and has over 400 stations. As of April 2013, there were 26 active public bike sharing programs within the US. This number is expected to double within the next few years.
