The North Face names Fleet Feet Aptos winner of the Never Stop Exploring Award

Northern California-based specialty running store awarded $5,000 to support activities getting more people outside

AUSTIN, Texas – December 4, 2014 – The North Face has named Northern California Fleet Feet Aptos the winner of The North Face 2014 Running Specialty Never Stop Exploring Award, recognizing the specialty running store that demonstrates the most dedication to encouraging and enabling outdoor exploration within the community. The specialty dealer, with two locations in the greater Santa Cruz and Monterey Calif. areas, Fleet Feet Aptos was selected for its commitment to getting more people outdoors and enjoying healthier lifestyles through running.

“As one of the first touch points for a new runner, specialty running stores should serve as ambassadors to the sport, inviting in new communities to participate, and become part of the tribe. Fleet Feet Aptos doesn’t just support runners, they reach out to future runners young and old and help them discover a love for the sport they may never have found otherwise,” said The North Face National Specialty Sales Manager Jeff Brusven, who presented the award to Fleet Feet Aptos owners Russ and Tina Coillot. ” We are proud to support them as they continue to inspire the their community to experience the outdoors and improve their lives through running.”

The honor was awarded Thursday during The Running Event, a trade show for specialty-run retailers in Austin, Texas, to Russ and Tina Coillot who have owned and operated the two stores since 2010. Prior to becoming part of the Fleet Feet Family, the Coillot’s were working in high stress jobs, living inactive lives and smoking up to two packs of cigarettes a day. They found their love of healthy living through running after joining a Fleet Feet 5K Training Program and have never looked back.

Fleet Feet Aptos reaches out to veterans in transition, at risk youth, local schools, and victims of domestic violence by providing training, equipment, and funding in an effort to make positive change to their community through running. Programs like Adopt-an-Athlete, which provides gear and training for military veterans in transition from active service, and Project Fit, which supports elementary school running programs, represent only a small portion of the ways Fleet Feet Aptos is making a positive impact on its community and encouraging more people to explore the outdoors.

In recognition of Fleet Feet Aptos’ contribution to the Northern California Coast running community, The North Face will donate $5,000 to help expand community programs like Project Fit.

The North Face created the Never Stop Exploring Award in 2010 – a retail-specific complement to the brand’s Explore Fund grant program for non-profits – in an effort to encourage Running Specialty stores to initiate local community programs that break down the barriers to getting people outdoors. The award recognizes and supports retailers with programs dedicated to inspiring and enabling the next generation of explorers.
