Business news : Bike market in France in 2012, the Electric Assist Bicycles strong growth.

The Electric Assist Bicycles strong growth 

According to the Cycle Observatory, sales of cycles, equipment and components, with a turnover of 1.28 billion declined 4% in 2012. 

On the cycle market only, sales were down 9% in volume. However, in value terms, the decline was less marked, with 4.5%. 

The turnover achieved when EUR 809.8 million. The 4.5% increase in the average price of the bike (278 euros) limit the impact of lower sales volumes. 

Different categories of bikes, trends are varied:

Bikes mainly used for recreation arrive each year as the head of sales. Mountain biking, junior and adult, represents 46.5% of the market volume and VTC holds just over 12%. However, in adults, these categories of bikes experiencing declines (12% for ATV entry and mid-range, 11% for VTC). 

Cycles designed for sports competitions or outputs such as bicycles race or high-end bike maintain their market share, but are withdrawal volumes sold with 7% and 3.5% respectively.Bicycles designed for mobility (city bike, bike electric assistance, folding bike) saw their market share increase to slightly 9.5%. Despite a decline in sales volume last year by 4%,the revenue generated by this family increased by 2%. 

The electric bike is experiencing a remarkable increase of 15% over the threshold of 46,000 volumes sold. This is the only segment in the 5 dernièresannées steadily. 

Sales of equipment and accessories (locks, pumps, helmets, textiles, wheels, etc ...) for cycles amounted to € 465.5 million, a decrease of 3% compared to 2011. 

For Distribution terms: 

The Cycle Specialists maintain their position as the leading economic actor sector with 51.5% share of the global market (cycles + components and accessories).

Despite a fall in turnover of 2.5%. Their strong presence in markets high-end bike and VAE limit the effects of the decline in sales volume. 

The multisports Department Stores remain the first distribution channel cycles in volume with 52% of sales. Their total activity (+ components and cycles accessories) represents 39% of sales in the sector, down 4%.

Large food stores and other types of signs are experiencing a sharp decline in their sales across the sector (10.5%). However,This volume continues to be significant network representing 25% of salescycle market


The Observatory cycle is achieved by the Commission Cycle CNPC / FPS after the partnership agreement between these organizations.
